Opinion texts give students a clear point of view to notice and discuss. These 3rd grade argumentative reading passages help readers identify what a writer thinks, find reasons for that view, and talk about details that support it. Comprehension questions bring students back to the text as they explain an answer.
Claim and reasons. Ask what the writer wants readers to think or do. Find a reason that supports the position and explain how the two ideas connect.
Evidence and examples. Notice a fact, example, or detail the writer uses. Students can discuss how it helps readers understand a reason.
Purpose and audience. Consider who the message is for and what response the writer hopes to receive. Look at a word or example that helps communicate the idea.

If students have different reactions to the writer's view, ask them to separate their own opinion from what the passage says. They can still explain whether a reason is clear by pointing to the words and examples the writer chose.
