Your Busy Blood
Your body has a big job to do every single day. It needs to move blood to every part of you. This is called the circulatory system. Think of it like a busy highway in your body. Instead of cars, tiny drops of blood travel through long tubes. These tubes are called blood vessels. They are everywhere in your body from your head to your toes.
Your heart is the engine that moves the blood. It acts like a very strong pump. Every time your heart beats, it pushes blood through blood vessels. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Most arteries carry blood with lots of oxygen, but the arteries to your lungs carry blood with less oxygen. Blood also carries nutrients to your muscles. Your body needs these things to stay strong and healthy. You can feel your heart working if you put your hand on your chest.
After blood delivers oxygen to the body, veins carry it back toward your heart. The heart also pumps blood to your lungs, where it picks up oxygen. This trip happens over and over again. It never stops even when you are fast asleep. Your blood is always on the move.
