Play a picture-to-word memory game

This printable picture memory game uses eight illustrated topic items and their written words as matching pairs. Students cut out the cards, turn them over and remember where each picture or word appears as they look for its match.

The card-turning game differs from memory match worksheets, which pair topic words with meaning clues. For a direct picture and word connection on one page, try picture word match.

Keep the focus on recall and naming

When students find a pair, have them say the word, describe the image or use it in a sentence. Partners can take turns turning over two cards, naming what they see and checking whether the pair belongs together.

Each published picture pack includes eight illustrated words. Preview the theme and prepare the cut-out cards before starting the game.

Review vocabulary through play

The repeated turns give learners more chances to notice and recall the same vocabulary. To vary the next round, ask students to sort the images into groups with sort and classify or practice recall with picture flashcards.
