Leo zipped up his jacket as the cool morning fog drifted across the sanctuary. Today was his first time volunteering at the Whispering Pines Wildlife Center with his aunt, Dr. Elena, a veterinarian who cared for injured forest animals.
Their first stop was the raccoon enclosure. Two playful young raccoons chittered with excitement when they saw the silver food buckets. Leo watched carefully as Dr. Elena demonstrated how to hide walnuts and blueberries inside hollow wooden blocks.
"Enrichment activities keep their minds active while their injuries heal," Dr. Elena explained, passing a wooden puzzle block to Leo. He tucked a handful of berries inside and placed it near the climbing logs. One raccoon immediately scrambled over, using its nimble paws to roll the block until a berry popped out. Leo smiled, fascinated by the animal's cleverness.
By midday, the sun broke through the clouds, warming the sanctuary grounds. Leo helped prepare special formula for three orphaned baby squirrels. Using tiny droppers, they gently fed the small creatures, making sure each one drank enough to grow strong. It required patience and a steady hand, but seeing the squirrels curl up peacefully made the careful work completely worthwhile.
Before finishing his shift, Leo accompanied his aunt to check on a red-tailed hawk named Orion, who was recovering from a wing injury. Dr. Elena carefully inspected the bird's feathers while Leo recorded notes on a clipboard. Seeing the impressive raptor stretch its powerful wings reminded Leo how vital the sanctuary's mission was. Walking back to the main office, Leo realized he could not wait to come back next weekend.
