All About Seals

Seals are amazing animals that live in the big, blue sea. They spend most of their time in the cold water.

Seals have thick skin and a layer of fat. This fat is called blubber.

The blubber keeps the seals warm in the icy ocean. It works just like a cozy winter coat.

Seals are very good at swimming. They use their strong flippers to move fast through the waves.

Their bodies are smooth and shaped like a long tube. This helps them glide without any trouble.

Seals can dive very deep to find their food. They love to eat small fish and slippery squid.

When they are not swimming, seals come onto the land or ice. This is called hauling out.

They like to nap under the bright sun. Sometimes they make loud barking noises to talk to each other.

Seals have long, stiff whiskers on their faces. These whiskers help them feel for fish in the dark water.

Seals often live in big groups. These groups are called colonies.

They look out for each other while they rest on the beach. Baby seals are called pups.

The pups have soft white fur. They stay very close to their mothers to stay safe and warm.

Seals can stay underwater for a long time. But they must come up to the top to breathe air.

They use their noses to take a big breath at the surface. Then they dive back down to play.

Seeing a seal jump in the water is a fun sight. They are wonderful and smart creatures of the ocean.
