Maine is the easternmost state in the contiguous United States, famous for its dramatic natural beauty and rich maritime culture. Located in the northeastern region known as New England, Maine is bordered by New Hampshire to the west, Canada to the north and east, and the vast Atlantic Ocean to the south. One of Maine's most famous features is its jagged coastline. If you stretched out all the deep bays, small inlets, and offshore islands, Maine's shoreline would actually measure longer than the coastline of California! Along this rugged shore stand more than sixty historic lighthouses. For hundreds of years, these tall towers have flashed bright lights to guide sailors safely through foggy weather and dangerous, rocky waters. Today, many of these lighthouses are preserved as historic sites that attract visitors from around the world.

Inland from the ocean, Maine is almost entirely covered by vast forests. In fact, it is nicknamed "The Pine Tree State" because thick evergreen trees cover nearly ninety percent of its land area. These expansive woods are home to diverse wildlife, including black bears, bald eagles, and the majestic moose, which is Maine's official state mammal. Thousands of clear lakes, winding rivers, and rolling hills crisscross the interior, providing scenic spots for hiking, camping, and fishing.

Maine’s natural environment plays a major role in its economy and traditions. Ocean fishing has always been a key industry, with Maine lobsters recognized worldwide for their quality. Skilled lobstermen set special traps, called lobster pots, into the cold ocean water to catch seafood. In addition to fishing, Maine is famous for producing wild blueberries, maple syrup, and lumber from its pine forests. Whether exploring deep woods or watching boats return to a harbor, people in Maine share a strong connection to the land and the sea.
