A tall burst of water shoots into the sky! People watch from a safe spot. They have come to see Old Faithful.
Old Faithful is a geyser in Yellowstone National Park. A geyser is a place where hot water and steam burst out of the ground.
Deep under Old Faithful, water collects in cracks in the rock. Hot rock warms the water. As the water gets hotter, steam builds up.
At last, hot water and steam rush out. This burst is called an eruption. The spray can rise much higher than a tall tree!
The burst does not last all day. After a few minutes, the water falls back down. Steam may still drift up from the ground.
Then Old Faithful rests. Water collects under the ground again. Later, the geyser will erupt once more.
Old Faithful often erupts about every hour and a half. But the wait can be shorter or longer. Park workers use past eruptions to guess when the next one will happen.
Visitors can watch from behind a railing along the boardwalk. They stay on the marked path because the water and ground near geysers can be very hot.
While people wait, they may see steam rise into the air. Far away, mountains stand beyond the geyser. Then another burst of hot water rises into the sky.
