High atop the jagged cliffs of the Great Crag, Pip tucked his leathery wings tight against his body. Below him, the prehistoric jungle looked like a sea of emerald green, dotted with the silver ribbons of winding rivers. Pip was a young Pterodactyl, and today was the day he was expected to take his first solo flight across the valley.
His mother, a magnificent creature with a wingspan as wide as a small boat, circled gracefully above. "The wind is your friend, Pip," she called out, her voice echoing against the stone. "Feel the heat rising from the valley floor. It will lift you up."
Pip took a deep breath, smelling the damp moss and the distant scent of salt from the ocean. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He watched his older sister, Seraphina, dive fearlessly from a nearby ledge. She tucked her wings, plummeted for a few seconds, and then snapped them open. With a powerful snap, she caught a warm updraft and spiraled toward the clouds.
"You can do this," Pip whispered to himself. He crept to the very edge of the precipice. The pebbles shifted under his talons, tumbling into the abyss. He looked at the horizon where the sun was just beginning to climb. He knew that the Great Crag provided safety, but the sky offered the entire world.
Suddenly, a strong gust of wind swept up the face of the cliff. It ruffled the fine fuzz on Pip’s neck. Without giving himself another moment to be afraid, he pushed off with his powerful hind legs. For a terrifying heartbeat, he felt the stomach-churning pull of gravity. Then, he stretched his long, thin fingers wide. The skin of his wings pulled taut, catching the air like the sails of a ship.
Instead of falling, Pip felt a sudden surge. The air pushed him upward, higher than the Crag itself. He tilted his head, and the world tilted with him. He wasn't just falling; he was gliding. The fear evaporated, replaced by a soaring sense of freedom. He let out a triumphant screech that echoed across the ancient valley. Pip wasn't just a creature of the cliffs anymore; he was finally a master of the sky.
