Talking Kindly to Yourself

Taking a big test at school can feel hard. Your heart might beat fast, and you might feel worried.

Feeling worried before a test is normal. There is a simple trick that can help you feel calm.

It is called positive self-talk. Self-talk is the voice inside your head.

When you think good thoughts, you feel brave. Kind words can help your brain stay focused and calm.

Imagine two friends named Mia and Leo. They have a big spelling test today.

Mia feels very worried about the test. She thinks, "I cannot do this!"

This is called negative self-talk. It makes Mia feel even more scared.

Leo sees that his friend needs help. He tells Mia to change her words.

Leo says, "Say something kind to yourself!" He shares his favorite phrase: "I worked hard and I am ready!"

Mia takes a slow, deep breath. She says, "I can do my best on this test!"

Mia smiles because her brain feels calm now. Positive self-talk helped her feel strong and ready.

You can practice positive self-talk too! Before a big test, say nice things in your head.

You can say, "I am smart and brave!" You can say, "I will try my hardest today!"

Kind words give you power. Always be a good friend to yourself!
