As autumn leaves turn bright shades of orange and red, wild hedgehogs begin preparing for their long winter sleep, known as hibernation. During this cold season, these prickly little mammals need a safe, dry, and warm place to rest until spring arrives. You can help your local backyard wildlife by building a cozy hedgehog shelter right in your garden.
First, choose the perfect location. Hedgehogs prefer quiet, shaded spots away from busy pathways, strong winds, and heavy rain. A dry area beneath a thick bush, under a wooden deck, or tucked away in a quiet corner of a yard is ideal.
Next, gather your materials. You can make a sturdy shelter using a strong wooden box or a heavy plastic storage bin placed upside down. The box should be large enough for a hedgehog to move around comfortably inside. Carefully ask an adult to help you cut an entrance hole that is about thirteen centimeters wide. To protect the hedgehog from curious pets or bigger predators, attach a short wooden tunnel or pipe to the entrance.
Once the structure is ready, focus on cozy insulation. Hedgehogs love nesting in dry leaves, clean straw, or shredded newspaper. Fill the shelter loosely with these materials so the hedgehog can burrow deeply inside to stay warm. Make sure to cover the outside of the box with a waterproof layer, branches, and soil to keep the rain out and help the home blend into nature.
Finally, set up a welcoming area outside the shelter. Leave out a heavy bowl of fresh drinking water. Never offer milk, as it can make hedgehogs very sick. With a little effort, your yard can become a warm, life-saving refuge for a hedgehog this autumn!
