Nature's Silly "Vampires"

When you hear the word "vampire," you might picture a dramatic figure in a black cape who vanishes into the night. You might even think of funny cartoon characters who obsessively count colorful socks or refuse to eat garlic bread. While fictional vampires are famous for being spooky or silly, nature actually has its own group of weird and wonderful creatures named after these legendary monsters. Luckily, real-world "vampires" are much more fascinating—and far less scary—than the stories suggest.

Take the vampire bat, for example. Although people often imagine vampire bats as terrifying beasts, they are surprisingly clumsy on the ground. Instead of swooping down like movie villains, vampire bats actually scamper along the cave floor on their thumbs and feet like awkward little frogs. They do feed on blood, mostly from sleepy farm animals, but they drink less than a single tablespoon per meal. Even funnier, these tiny mammals are surprisingly polite. If a hungry bat friend misses a meal, another bat will happily share its food!

Deep underwater lives another strange creature: the vampire squid. Despite its intimidating name, this creature does not hunt for blood at all. In fact, it does not even hunt living prey! The vampire squid floats peacefully in the dark ocean depths, eating drift particles known as "marine snow," which is mostly made of bits of floating ocean fluff. When startled, instead of biting, the squid turns itself completely inside out like a squishy umbrella to hide from predators.

Finally, consider the vampire crab. Named for its glowing yellow eyes and bright purple shell, this tiny land crab looks like it is wearing a miniature Halloween costume every day. Aquarium lovers enjoy keeping them because of their goofy, energetic behavior.

From thumb-waddling bats to umbrella-folding squids, nature's vampires prove that real life can be just as funny and unusual as any spooky story.
