Earth Reading Passages
Build a connected picture of planet Earth
These Earth reading passages bring together the planet's physical features, living environments, and natural resources. Teachers and parents can use the collection to connect several science topics through one familiar subject: the world students live in.
“Our Amazing Planet Earth” offers a broad starting point. Follow it with “The Amazing Journey of Earth's Water” to examine how water moves between places. Ask readers to explain one connection between air, water, and land using details from both texts. This keeps the lesson focused on relationships rather than a list of disconnected facts.
Follow a question into a closer reading
For a seasons lesson, choose “Earth's Seasons: A Tilted Ride Around the Sun.” For landforms, use “Exploring Earth's Majestic Mountains.” Students can compare the kinds of causes each passage explains and organize their evidence in a short written response.
“Peeking Beneath Earth's Surface with Geologic Maps” introduces the clues geologists use to understand the ground below us. The Craters of the Moon geologist interview adds another nonfiction format and a specific volcanic landscape. Invite students to compare how an interview and an explanatory passage present scientific information.
“Exploring Earth's Diverse Habitats” connects geography with living things. “Caring for Our Earth” offers a simpler entry into environmental responsibility, while the 8th grade elements passage examines metals, non-metals, minerals, and ores.
Match the text to your lesson
The readings range from Lower Elementary to Middle School, including passages labeled for 4th, 6th, and 8th grade. Choose individual texts for the knowledge and reading demands of your group; the collection does not provide a passage at every grade.
For a broader earth science unit, explore the published Earth Science Week collection. For lessons centered on protecting natural resources, continue with environment reading passages.
