Galileo and the Spinning Sun
Galileo Galilei was a famous scientist who lived in Italy over four hundred years ago. He was very curious about the night sky and the stars. To see farther into space, Galileo built a tool called a telescope. This special tool made distant objects look much larger and closer.
One day, Galileo decided to study the sun. Looking straight at the bright sun can hurt your eyes, so he used a safe method to project its picture onto a wall. When he looked at the sun, he saw dark spots on its surface. Today, we call these marks sunspots.
As Galileo watched the sunspots every day, he noticed that they moved across the sun. This proved that the sun turns around, or rotates, in space. His discoveries taught people that the sun gives Earth light and heat energy. Galileo showed us that we can learn about our world by making observations and asking big questions.
