It is a rainy day outside. Big puddles are on the ground.

You want to jump and play. What do you put on your feet?

You put on bright rain boots! These special boots keep your feet warm and dry.

Most rain boots are made of rubber. Rubber is smooth and thick.

Water cannot get through rubber. The rain hits the boot and rolls down to the ground.

Now think about a regular cloth shoe. A cloth sneaker has tiny holes between the threads.

Water sneaks into the tiny holes. The cloth soaks up the wet water like a sponge.

If you step in a puddle with cloth shoes, your socks get wet. Wet socks feel cold and squishy!

Rubber is different. It does not soak up any water at all.

Rubber is waterproof. That means it keeps all the water out.

The water stays on the outside of the rubber boot. Your feet stay cozy and dry inside.

Rubber boots let you splash in big puddles without any wet socks!
