Places to Sit and Read

Children read books in many different spots. Two common places are a library chair and a classroom rug.

A library chair is made of hard wood or plastic. It has four straight legs and a flat back.

This chair keeps a reader sitting up tall. A small wooden desk is often right in front of it.

A reader can place a heavy book flat on the wooden table. The room stays quiet around the desk.

A classroom rug is very different. It rests flat on the floor and feels soft.

Many rugs have bright colors or shapes like blue circles and red squares. A child can sit with crossed legs on the soft yarn.

Some readers like to lean against a wall while sitting on the rug. Other children hold a picture book right in their laps.

A chair gives firm support for a reader's back. A rug lets a reader stretch out legs on the floor.

Both spots give children a safe, calm space to hold a book.
