First-grade informational passages with questions

Nonfiction reading can begin with a question children already wonder about: What does an animal eat? How does a tool help? What can we learn about a place? Read an informational passage aloud and pause to name the topic. Questions guide children back to facts and details that help explain it.

Keep a first response simple. Ask each child to tell one thing the passage taught them, then invite the group to find where that fact appears. Children can notice that several details are about the same topic. A quick oral summary might begin, “This passage is about…” and include one detail from the reading.

Explore informational formats and real topics

Choose an explanatory article to hear how something works, or a report to gather facts about a subject. A news article can introduce an event, while an interview shares information through questions and answers. Read a short section twice and ask what new detail children noticed the second time.

Connect the topic to a science or social studies conversation without turning every detail into a quiz. Children can draw one fact, tell a partner what it shows, and listen for another detail they missed. Pair nonfiction with 1st grade biographies to talk about facts in a real person’s life, or explore fiction passages for a story-based retelling.

After a first read, give children a moment to think quietly before partner talk. One child can name the topic, and the other can add a fact from the text. Switch roles with a second question so both readers explain an idea and listen for a detail they had not noticed.
