Maplewood Elementary Fifth-Grade Fossil Replica Showcase

Attention all students, families, and staff of Maplewood Elementary:
The fifth-grade science classes are proud to present our annual Earth History Exhibition! Over the past six weeks, fifth graders have investigated ancient life forms, geologic time periods, and the rock cycle. To share what we have learned, our hallway and science laboratory will feature a special interactive display highlighting prehistoric life on Earth.
Exhibition Purpose
The primary goal of this event is to demonstrate how scientists study organisms from millions of years ago. Real fossils—such as genuine dinosaur bones or ancient shells buried in stone—are extremely rare, fragile, and valuable. Scientists cannot risk damaging genuine specimens during ordinary public demonstrations. Instead, researchers make casts and molds called replicas. These replicas capture the exact size, texture, and shape of original bones and leaves without placing delicate ancient artifacts in danger. Our exhibition allows visitors to examine high-detail replicas of trilobites, ammonites, fern leaves, and dinosaur teeth while protecting the authentic research samples kept in state museum vaults.
Location and Schedule
The showcase will take place in the East Wing Science Corridor and Room 204.
