Meet Mr. Rivera: School Bus Driver

Reporter: Good morning, Mr. Rivera! What is the first thing you do before you drive your yellow school bus?
Mr. Rivera: Good morning! Before anyone steps on board, I inspect the whole bus. I check the tires, lights, and mirrors. Then, I review my route map. I make sure I know every stop where children will be waiting.
Reporter: How do you help riders during the trip?
Mr. Rivera: I greet each student with a warm smile. I make sure everyone sits down safely before I press the gas pedal. While I drive, my job is to keep my eyes on the road. The children help me by using quiet indoor voices so I can focus.
Reporter: What should students do while they wait at the bus stop in the morning?
Mr. Rivera: It is best to wait with a trusted adult. Stand several big steps back from the street or curb. Never run, push, or chase a ball near the street. Stay in a calm line until the bus comes to a complete stop and the door opens.
Reporter: What should riders do if they need to cross the street to get on?
