Note: This is a fictional interview for classroom learning.

Question: Welcome, Ms. Clara! How do you begin making a new puppet?

Ms. Clara: I always start with a pencil and paper. I sketch my ideas first! A sketch is a quick drawing. I might draw big ears, wide eyes, or a happy smile. Drawing helps me plan what the puppet will look like before I build it.

Question: What materials do you choose to build your puppets?

Ms. Clara: I like to use simple things you can find at home or in school. Clean socks, brown paper bags, and cardboard tubes make great puppet bodies. Next, I choose soft felt scraps and yarn for hair. I use safe craft tape and glue sticks to hold the parts together. You do not need hard or sharp tools to make a great puppet.

Question: How do you test your puppet after you make it?

Ms. Clara: I test how it moves! That is my favorite part. I slip the puppet onto my hand to see what it can do. If it is a sock puppet, I open and close my fingers. That makes the puppet look like it is talking. If it is a bag puppet, I move the paper flap up and down.
