Leo sat on a mossy stone, sighing as he looked at his empty notebook. His teacher, Ms. Gable, had assigned a project to observe nature and write a report. Leo thought nature was just grass and trees. To him, it seemed like a lot of green space where nothing much ever happened. He didn't see what was so exciting about things that just sat there in the sun.
"Look closer, Leo," his grandmother said, kneeling beside a large, fallen oak log near the edge of the woods. "Nature doesn't always shout to get your attention. Sometimes it whispers."
Leo crawled over to the log, feeling the damp ground through his jeans. At first, it just looked like a piece of rotting wood covered in dirt. But as he stayed still and watched, a tiny world began to appear. A line of bright red ants marched across a ridge of bark like tiny soldiers on a mission. A pill bug, or "roly-poly," curled into a tight silver ball when Leo’s shadow fell over it.
"That log is like a busy apartment building," Grandma explained quietly. "Beneath the bark, hundreds of creatures are working, eating, and living. They are decomposers. They help turn the old wood back into rich soil, which helps new trees grow tall."
Leo pulled a magnifying glass from his pocket. Through the lens, a patch of neon-green moss looked like a thick, miniature forest. Tucked inside a small crevice, he spotted a bright yellow slime mold. It looked like a splash of spilled paint, but Leo remembered reading that it was a living organism searching for food.
Suddenly, a small toad hopped out from under a dry leaf. Its skin was the exact color of the fallen leaves and dried mud. Leo held his breath as the toad sat perfectly still, its golden eyes blinking slowly. He realized that if he had been running or shouting, he never would have noticed this master of disguise.
Leo began to scribble quickly in his notebook. He drew a diagram of the "Log Apartment" and wrote a description of the "Hidden Toad." He realized that nature wasn't just a backdrop for his backyard; it was a busy, living community. By the time the sun began to set, Leo’s notebook was full of sketches and notes. Nature wasn't boring at all; he just hadn't been looking in the right places.
