Every second grade classroom should have a class nature notebook. A nature notebook is a special journal where students draw and write about the outdoor world. Having this book would make our school days more exciting and help us become better observers.

First, keeping a nature notebook helps us notice tiny changes right outside our door. Sometimes, students walk past the playground bushes without looking at them. If we carry a notebook outside, we look closer. Last week, a bush by the fence had small green buds. A few days later, bright yellow flowers opened up. If we draw those changes in a notebook, we learn how plants grow over time.

Second, writing in a nature notebook helps us understand the weather. On gray days, we might think nothing interesting is happening. However, we can look up and sketch the shape of the clouds. We can record if the wind is blowing dry leaves across the grass or if raindrops are making circles in the puddles. When we write down what the sky looks like each day, we can see patterns in the seasons.
