Invite children to consider a simple why question: why might the writer prefer this choice? The passage may offer a reason, an example, or a detail that helps readers understand. Then let partners compare whether they agree and give one reason of their own. The goal is to listen and explain an idea clearly, with the writer’s view kept separate from each reader’s response.
Read opinion pieces and persuasive letters
Explore an opinion piece to follow a point of view and its reasons. A persuasive letter has a particular recipient, which helps readers consider who the writer hopes to persuade. Ask partners to identify the view, find a supporting reason, and explain what the letter asks its reader to think or do.
Children can practice an oral response before writing one or two sentences. For a contrast in purpose, read 2nd grade informational passages and distinguish facts about a topic from a writer’s opinion. Stories in 2nd grade fiction offer character choices to discuss from another perspective.
