Free 2nd Grade Argumentative Reading Passages

Grade 2 argumentative passages help students practice reading simple opinions and reasons. PicoBuddy offers 2nd grade argumentative reading passages that introduce students to claim-based reading in a friendly and age-appropriate way.

Every PicoBuddy passage includes comprehension questions, an online quiz, a free PDF download and an editable Word download. You can print the PDF for class, use the online quiz for independent practice or adapt the Word version when you want to adjust the activity.

Second graders can read about topics such as pets, school rules, favorite activities, healthy choices, teamwork, playgrounds or helping the community. These topics are easy to understand and give students something to discuss.

Argumentative passages at this level can help students identify the writer’s opinion, find reasons, remember details, learn vocabulary and begin explaining whether they agree or disagree. This also supports early opinion writing.

For more texts at this level, browse Grade 2 reading passages. If you are supporting reading at home, the parents page gives more context for using PicoBuddy outside the classroom.

You can also create a custom Grade 2 argumentative passage about a topic your students are studying or curious about.
