Why Taking Turns in Partner Reading Is Best

Reading with a partner is one of the best parts of the school day. When two students share a book, they need to decide how to read it. In my opinion, students should always take turns reading page by page.
First, taking turns makes partner reading fair. If only one person reads the whole story, the other person just sits and listens. That partner might get bored or daydream. When partners switch back and forth, both kids get a chance to practice. Everyone feels included, and nobody feels left out.
Second, taking turns helps your voice rest. Reading out loud takes a lot of energy. If you read five pages in a row, your throat might get tired. When your partner reads the next page, you can relax your voice. While you rest, you can track the words with your finger and look at the pictures.
