Dear Ms. Henderson,

My name is Maya Lin, and I am a fifth grader at Oak Creek Elementary. I live just three blocks from the Maple Street Community Center. My younger brother, Leo, and I walk over almost every Friday afternoon to use the craft room or read in the lobby. We really appreciate how welcoming the center is to neighborhood families, and that is why I am writing to you today with an idea that could make our Friday afternoons even better.

I would like to propose starting an inclusive, weekly board-game club in the Oak Room from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays. Right now, there are great programs for sports like indoor soccer and basketball, but there are fewer options for kids who prefer quiet, cooperative activities or who simply want a break from running around after a long week of school. A board-game club would provide a safe, calm space where kids of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities could hang out together and make new friends.

Glossary
inclusive:
Open to everyone and making sure all people feel welcome and valued.
cooperative:
Involving people working together toward a shared goal rather than competing against each other.
pilot program:
A short-term test or trial used to see how well an idea works before making it permanent.
supervisor:
An adult who watches over an activity to make sure people stay safe and follow routines.
routine:
A regular, organized way of doing things on a repeated schedule.
strategy:
A careful plan or method chosen to achieve a specific goal or solve a puzzle.
