Dear Mrs. Lopez,

I am writing to ask if we can use the puppet box during partner reading time. Right now, the box sits on the high shelf in the corner. I think bringing it down to our reading rug would help our class enjoy books even more.

First, puppets make reading fun. When my partner and I read together, we can use the puppets to act out the characters. Last week, Maya and I read a fable about a turtle and a rabbit. If I held the rabbit puppet, I could use a fast, boastful voice. If Maya held the turtle puppet, she could use a slow, calm voice. Changing our voices helps us understand how the characters feel in the story.

Next, puppets help quiet readers feel brave. Sometimes, kids feel shy about reading out loud. My friend Sam gets nervous when it is his turn to read. But holding a fuzzy bear puppet makes reading feel like a game. The puppet does the talking, so the reader does not feel so scared.
