Dear Principal Ramirez,
As the winter season approaches, many students in our fifth-grade class have been talking about ways we can make a positive impact in our community. On behalf of Room 204, I am writing to propose that our school host a voluntary holiday giving drive this December. By organizing this project together, our school can support local families in a practical, organized, and inclusive way.
To ensure our drive is truly helpful, we researched local organizations and reached out to the Maplewood Community Center. Instead of guessing what people might need, we plan to use their official winter wish list. Their top requested items include new warm socks, waterproof mittens, fleece blankets, and nonperishable pantry goods. Following an established organization's checklist ensures that every donated item goes directly to people who can use it immediately. Furthermore, partnering with a community center protects privacy, as our drive focuses on community-wide support rather than asking students to identify specific individuals in need.
In addition, we want this project to be completely voluntary and inclusive for all students. No one should feel pressured to donate expensive items. Families can choose to contribute something as small as a single pair of warm socks or a box of hot cocoa mix. Students who cannot bring items can still participate actively by designing informational posters, decorating collection boxes, and helping to tally donations during morning homeroom.
From a practical standpoint, our class has already developed a simple plan to manage the logistics so it will not interrupt learning time. We can place three clearly labeled collection bins in the main entryway. Every Friday afternoon during our advisory period, student volunteers will sort, count, and box the items under Mrs. Gable’s supervision. At the end of the two-week drive, volunteers from the Maplewood Community Center have already agreed to pick up the boxed donations directly from our school lobby.
