Is this the right level?
- Knows everyday English words but is new to reading full sentences
- Reads best with short texts and lots of pictures
- Likes to hear a text read aloud before trying it alone
- Answers simple who/what/where questions about a story
Beginner passages use roughly Grade 1–2 reading difficulty (about Pre-A1 to A1, approximate). PicoBuddy levels describe the difficulty of the reading material. CEFR references are approximate and do not assess speaking, writing, listening, or a child’s complete English ability. Grade labels describe text difficulty and may not match a child’s age or school year.

Beginner reading passages
Each passage comes with questions, an online quiz, and a printable worksheet — most can be read aloud to your child first.
For parents at home
A simple routine: listen to the passage together, let your child read it back, then answer the questions. Ten minutes a day builds vocabulary and confidence.

Supporting Your Emerging English Reader
At the beginner level, young learners are transitioning from recognizing individual vocabulary words to understanding complete sentences. To prevent frustration, text must remain accessible. These resources use short sentences, familiar everyday vocabulary, and plenty of visual context clues to make reading feel achievable. Built-in audio read-aloud tools let children listen to the text first, helping them connect spoken English with written words before they try reading independently.
Targeted Language and Grammar Practice
Beyond simple stories, children can build foundational language skills through interactive practice. This level focuses on essential English grammar concepts, including:
- Nouns and Verbs: Master singular and plural nouns, matching verbs, and simple past, present, and future tenses.
- Sentence Building: Practice connecting ideas using conjunctions, prepositions, and determiners within simple and compound sentences.
- Word Games: Build vocabulary with interactive games available in easy, medium, and tricky modes.
Whether you are an EFL teacher planning a lesson or a parent supporting language learning at home, you can also generate custom stories tailored to your child's favorite topics.
