Confident English Reader
Practice for Confident English Readers
Help your child master intermediate English with engaging passages, interactive quizzes, and targeted grammar practice. Perfect for independent readers ready for longer stories, factual science and history texts, and richer vocabulary.
Is this the right level?
- Reads a full page of English comfortably
- Works out new words from context most of the time
- Can explain what happened in a story and why
- Handles fact texts about science, history, and nature
Intermediate passages use roughly Grade 4–6 reading difficulty (about A2 to B1, approximate). PicoBuddy levels describe the difficulty of the reading material. CEFR references are approximate and do not assess speaking, writing, listening, or a child’s complete English ability. Grade labels describe text difficulty and may not match a child’s age or school year.

Intermediate reading passages
Each passage comes with questions, an online quiz, and a printable worksheet — most can be read aloud to your child first.
For parents at home
A simple routine: listen to the passage together, let your child read it back, then answer the questions. Ten minutes a day builds vocabulary and confidence.

Transitioning to Independent Reading
Confident readers are ready to move beyond simple sentence structures. At this intermediate stage, learners engage with longer texts that cover science, history, and nature. They learn to deduce the meaning of unfamiliar words from context clues and explain the deeper motives behind a character's actions. To support this growth, our activities focus on richer vocabulary and comprehension questions that require thoughtful explanations rather than simple recall.
Mastering Intermediate Grammar & Vocabulary
Solidifying grammar is key to writing and speaking with confidence. Our curated resources help learners tackle complex structures, including:
- Sentence mechanics: Managing fragments, run-ons, and coordinating or subordinating conjunctions.
- Word forms: Understanding abstract nouns, modal auxiliaries, and progressive verb tenses.
- Modifiers: Mastering correct adjective order and comparative or superlative adverbs.
Learners can also listen along with read-aloud audio, print worksheets with answer keys for offline study, or play adaptive word games. Parents and tutors can even generate custom passages tailored to specific interests to keep reading practice exciting and relevant.
