Free 5th Grade Informational Reading Passages

Grade 5 informational reading passages help students work with nonfiction in a more thoughtful way. PicoBuddy offers 5th grade informational passages that support comprehension, vocabulary and knowledge building across a wide range of topics.

Every PicoBuddy passage includes comprehension questions, an online quiz, a free PDF download and an editable Word download. Teachers can use the PDF in class, assign the quiz online or edit the Word version for a specific lesson. Parents, homeschoolers and tutors can use the passages for extra practice without creating materials from scratch.

Fifth graders can use informational texts to practice central idea, supporting details, vocabulary in context, text structure, cause and effect, compare and contrast, summarizing and text evidence. These skills help students read nonfiction with more independence.

Topics can include science, history, animals, geography, technology, biographies, health, inventions and real-world questions. This gives students practice reading to learn, not only learning to read.

For more grade-level practice, browse Grade 5 reading passages. If you teach at home, the homeschool page explains how PicoBuddy can support flexible reading routines.

You can also create a custom Grade 5 informational passage when you need a text that matches a unit, theme, student interest or classroom discussion.
