A script gives partners a shared reason to reread: each reader follows a speaker and connects the dialogue to what happens. Before reading, name the characters and notice who has each part. After a scene, ask what happened first, what changed, and how the scene ended. Questions help children revisit a line that clarifies the event.
Second graders can connect a character’s words with an action or response. Ask why a speaker might have said something and what clue in the dialogue supports an answer. Children can also notice a new word and use the surrounding lines to work out what it might mean. A short oral explanation lets partners test whether their interpretation fits the scene.
Practice partner reading and oral responses
Read the script in pairs or a small group, then switch roles for a second reading. Invite each child to choose one line that helps explain a character or event. Partners can talk through a comprehension question before sharing a short answer with the class. This sequence makes the script part of a reading lesson, with discussion connected to the text.
