Stories give second graders a sequence of events to connect. After reading, ask what happened at the beginning, what changed in the middle, and how the story ended. Invite children to explain how one event led to the next. If their retellings differ, return to a detail in the passage and decide where it belongs in the sequence.
Character choices create another useful reading conversation. Ask what a character wanted, what the character did, and what happened afterward. A simple why question can prompt an inference: Why might the character have made that choice? Children can point to an action or line that works as a clue and explain the connection in their own words.
Discuss story clues and unfamiliar words
Read an interesting scene twice. On the second reading, invite partners to notice a detail that changes how they understand a character or event. Ask what a character may be feeling and which words or actions support that idea. When a story includes a new word, look at the sentence around it and discuss what context clues suggest.
Explore short-story passages for a focused beginning-middle-end retelling. A diary entry gives readers one speaker’s account of an event. Compare that voice with a narrator in the story, then continue with 2nd grade informational passages for nonfiction reading.
Let partners compare two possible explanations before they settle on an answer. Each reader can name a clue, then explain how it connects to the character’s choice. If the story includes a word they do not know, reread the whole sentence and use the surrounding action to make a sensible guess.
