An opinion passage gives children a clear choice or point of view to discuss. Read the text aloud and ask what the writer thinks. First graders can listen for a reason the writer gives and tell whether they agree. The comprehension questions make it easier to return to the writer’s words and keep the conversation tied to the text.
Keep the task concrete. If a passage gives reasons for a choice, invite children to name one reason in their own words. Ask what in the passage helped them understand the writer’s view. A teacher can model that people may choose differently and still listen to one another. Children practice explaining an idea with a detail rather than trying to win an argument.
Compare opinions, reasons, and formats
Explore an opinion piece for a writer’s view on a topic, or read a persuasive letter to notice who receives the message. Ask children to name the opinion and one reason, then talk about how a letter’s recipient differs from a general audience.
Use partner talk before inviting a few oral answers from the class. Children can complete a sentence such as “The writer thinks ___ because ___.” Continue with 1st grade informational passages to read about facts, or compare the writer’s point of view with a character in fiction passages.
Keep the exchange friendly by modeling how to listen to a different choice. Ask each child to repeat the writer’s opinion before sharing a personal response. That small distinction helps young readers tell what the passage says apart from what they think about the topic.
