How to choose a reading level

Select a practical starting level and adjust it when the generated passage is too easy or too hard.

Updated 8/25/2026 grade, reading level, difficulty, differentiate

Choose the level that best matches what the learner can read now. A school grade can be a useful starting point, but it is not a diagnosis or a fixed label.

After generation, review sentence length, vocabulary, background knowledge, and how much support the learner would need. If the passage is too easy or too difficult, use Remix to create a separate version at another level. The original stays unchanged.

For a learner profile, keep the profile level reasonably current. PicoBuddy can use it when preparing recommendations or a practice path, while the adult can still choose a different level for an individual resource.

AI-generated levels are approximate. Your knowledge of the learner and your review of the actual text should lead the decision.
